The ideal candidate is a passionate software engineer for whom writing software is a hobby, who enjoys building side projects, and can take a rough idea and turn it into a live app. You should love shipping features end-to-end, value speed and pragmatism (knowing when to go 'quick and dirty' vs. polishing code), and take security and performance very seriously. A generalist mindset, comfort with wearing multiple hats, quick learning ability, and a keen eye for UI/UX are highly desirable. While experience with their tech stack (Ruby on Rails, PostgreSQL, Redis, ClickHouse, Redpanda, JavaScript, Vue.js, Tailwind, Docker) is a plus, the ability to pick up new technologies quickly is more important. You share the vision of software engineers being the artists of our age.

As a Backend Engineer, your mission will be to build and maintain the robust, scalable, and high-performance infrastructure that underpins Better Stack's suite of observability tools. You will be a key player in ensuring the reliability and efficiency of the systems that developers worldwide depend on.

Key responsibilities include:
- Developing, testing, and deploying secure, performant, and scalable backend services and APIs.
- Working extensively with our data layer, including PostgreSQL for transactional data, Redis for caching, and ClickHouse/Redpanda for high-throughput logging and telemetry data.
- Designing and implementing efficient data processing pipelines and storage solutions.
- Optimizing backend performance, including database queries, API response times, and resource utilization.
- Ensuring the security and integrity of backend systems and data.
- Collaborating with frontend engineers, product managers, and designers to deliver features that require sophisticated backend logic.
- Contributing to architectural decisions and the evolution of our backend stack.
- Engaging in pragmatic problem-solving to ensure the resilience and scalability of our platform.

This role requires a deep understanding of backend technologies, system design, and data management. You will be instrumental in building the foundational components that enable Better Stack to deliver a seamless and powerful experience to its users.
