Senior Systems Engineer

**About Bun:** Bun is an open-source JavaScript tooling company focused on making programming simpler. We've raised $26 million from top investors in Silicon Valley, are among the most popular GitHub repositories and have a growing community of 33,000 Discord members. We're hiring systems engineers to come to San Francisco and help us make JavaScript faster and more productive. This role will involve lots of open-source low-level systems work, mostly in Bun's GitHub repository and eventually in a commercial hosting product.

**Key Responsibilities:**
- Lead the design and development of systems that optimize JavaScript performance and scalability.
- Drive architectural decisions for high-impact projects, ensuring reliability and efficiency.
- Co-author long-term technical roadmaps that set the vision for JavaScript runtime improvements.
- Set the standard for a culture of engineering and operational excellence.
- Build and nurture effective partnerships across engineering, product, and security teams to align on runtime infrastructure goals.
- Lead and conduct design reviews for critical projects with a focus on system-level tradeoffs and JavaScript performance.
- Drive the design and implementation of “secure by default” runtime systems in collaboration with security teams.
- Act as a key stakeholder by engaging with developers and internal teams to understand JavaScript requirements and deliver innovative solutions.

**Required Skills and Qualifications:**
- Proven experience leading complex engineering efforts focused on JavaScript performance, runtime systems, and low-level optimization.
- Exceptional collaboration and communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to align stakeholders and lead cross-functional teams.
- A track record of contributing to long-term technical roadmaps and making thoughtful system-level tradeoffs.
- At least 8+ years of coding experience in languages like C, C++, Zig, Go, or Rust, with strong expertise in writing concurrent and distributed code.
- Extensive experience designing and building distributed systems, leveraging concurrency primitives, and optimizing JavaScript execution.
- Deep expertise in JavaScript runtimes, with familiarity across adjacent infrastructure domains.
- Hands-on experience with cloud providers such as AWS, GCP, or Azure, and the ability to optimize cost, performance, and scalability.
- A strong sense of ownership and the ability to balance short-term priorities with long-term strategic goals.

**Compensation:**
The estimated pay range for this role is $160,000 - $220,000. Additionally, this role is eligible to participate in Bun's equity plan.
