Senior/Staff Engineer

About Clerq: Clerq is a NYC-based fintech startup building the next generation payments platform that delivers a seamless checkout experience for high-ticket transactions. We leverage modern bank rails to offer the conversion and UX benefits of cards with risk and money movement infrastructure purpose-built for large purchases. We started with the $1T+ U.S. auto vertical and have expanded into high-growth adjacencies including high-ticket e-commerce, private travel, and powersports.

About The Role: We are a lean team of 3 engineers looking for a Senior or Staff level engineer who is excited by big opportunities and eager to ship. This role will have a significant impact on our platform’s architecture and development.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead the design and development of systems that optimize payment processing and enhance user experience
• Drive architectural decisions for high-impact projects, ensuring scalability and reliability
• Build and nurture effective partnerships across engineering, product, and security teams
• Own the technical strategy for our payment infrastructure
• Mentor and guide engineers, sharing best practices for building reliable systems

Required Skills:

• Proven experience leading complex engineering efforts focused on payment systems
• Exceptional collaboration and communication skills
• Track record of contributing to long-term technical roadmaps
• At least 8+ years of coding experience in languages like Python, JavaScript
• Extensive experience designing and building distributed systems
• Deep expertise in payment processing systems
• Hands-on experience with cloud providers like AWS

Nice-to-Have:

• Experience with fintech or payments platforms
• Familiarity with React and Node.js
• Experience with Python/Django

Compensation: The estimated pay range for this role is $180,000 - $210,000 + Equity.

Location: Onsite in New York City
