**About The Role:** We are seeking a Machine Learning Engineer to join our team to help build and scale our AI research assistant. You will play a key role in developing and deploying machine learning models that help researchers make better decisions. This is an exciting opportunity to work on cutting-edge AI research and contribute to our mission of scaling up good reasoning.

**Key Responsibilities:**
* Design and implement machine learning models to improve the accuracy and reliability of Elicit's research assistant
* Collaborate with researchers and engineers to identify and solve complex problems in AI and machine learning
* Optimize existing models and develop new algorithms to enhance the performance of our product
* Work on AI safety and alignment, ensuring our models are robust and trustworthy
* Mentor junior engineers and contribute to a culture of innovation and excellence

**Required Skills and Ideal Candidate:**
* Proven experience in developing and deploying machine learning models, particularly in natural language processing and AI research
* Strong background in Python, TensorFlow, or PyTorch
* Experience with large-scale AI systems and the ability to scale models for millions of users
* A track record of contributing to open-source AI projects or publications in AI research
* Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced, low-bureaucracy environment
* Passion for AI safety and the responsible development of AI technologies

**Compensation:** The estimated pay range for this role is $150,000 - $220,000. Additionally, this role is eligible to participate in Elicit's equity plan.
