Company: Elicit is an AI research assistant using language models to help researchers find truth and make better decisions. We're a fast-growing startup ($5MM+ ARR, 450k MAU), spun out of the AI research lab Ought, with a strong focus on AI safety and long-term impact (Public Benefit Corp). Role: As a Front-end Engineer at Elicit, you will play a crucial role in building the user interface for our AI research assistant. You'll work closely with product, design, and backend engineers to create intuitive and powerful experiences for researchers interacting with complex language models and research data. You'll contribute to a product used by hundreds of thousands of users, shipping features frequently in a dynamic startup environment.

Responsibilities:
- Develop, test, and maintain user-facing features for the Elicit web application.
- Collaborate with designers and product managers to translate requirements into high-quality, interactive interfaces.
- Ensure the technical feasibility of UI/UX designs.
- Optimize application for maximum speed and scalability.
- Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code.
- Participate in code reviews and contribute to team best practices.

Ideal Candidate:
- Proven experience as a Front-end Engineer, preferably in an early-stage startup.
- Strong proficiency in modern JavaScript (ES6+), HTML5, and CSS3.
- Experience with front-end frameworks/libraries (e.g., React, Vue, Svelte - specific stack details would be clarified during interview).
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-agency environment with shifting priorities.
- Self-directed learner, able to make impactful decisions independently.
- Passionate about building tools that enhance research and reasoning.
- Experience with data visualization or interacting with AI/ML APIs is a plus.
- Thrives in low-bureaucracy settings and enjoys cross-functional collaboration.
- Willingness to travel for team get-togethers approximately every 6 weeks if remote.
