Company: Layer Health is building an AI layer for healthcare, founded by MIT/Harvard researchers, focusing on synthesizing medical records using LLMs to reduce friction and improve patient care. We've raised a $21M Series A.

Role: Staff+ Data Infrastructure / Data Platform Engineer/Architect

Location: Hybrid in Boston (Back Bay) or NYC (Grand Central). No remote option available.

Join our ~20 person team as a senior leader shaping our data platform. You will be responsible for designing, building, and scaling the data infrastructure and platform that powers Layer Health's AI capabilities. This includes data ingestion pipelines, storage solutions, processing frameworks, and tooling to support ML research and product development on GCP, handling sensitive medical data.

Responsibilities:
* Architect, build, and maintain scalable and reliable data pipelines and infrastructure on GCP.
* Design and implement data storage solutions (data lakes, data warehouses).
* Develop tools and frameworks for data processing, quality monitoring, and governance.
* Collaborate closely with MLEs, Research Scientists, and Backend Engineers.
* Drive the technical strategy and roadmap for the data platform.
* Ensure data security and compliance (e.g., HIPAA).
* Mentor other engineers on data engineering best practices.

Technical Skills:
* Extensive experience in data engineering and building large-scale data platforms.
* Strong programming skills, particularly in Python.
* Deep expertise with cloud data services, preferably on GCP (BigQuery, Dataflow, Pub/Sub, GCS).
* Experience with data processing frameworks (e.g., Spark, Beam).
* Proficiency with SQL and database design.
* Experience with workflow orchestration tools (e.g., Airflow).
* Understanding of data modeling, data warehousing, and data lake concepts.
* Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform) and CI/CD practices.

Ideal Candidate:
* Minimum 4 years (Staff level implies significantly more experience is likely preferred) of professional data engineering experience, with a track record of architecting data platforms.
* Strong understanding of the challenges of working with sensitive data (healthcare data is a plus).
* Ability to lead complex technical projects and make architectural decisions.
* Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.
* Passion for leveraging data to improve healthcare.
