Company: Layer Health is building an AI layer for healthcare, founded by leading machine learning researchers from MIT and Harvard Medical School. We focus on synthesizing medical records using LLMs to reduce friction and improve patient care. We've raised a $21M Series A.

Role: Research Scientist (PhD Required)

Location: Hybrid in Boston (Back Bay) or NYC (Grand Central). No remote option available.

Join our ~20 person team to conduct cutting-edge research in machine learning, particularly focusing on Large Language Models (LLMs) applied to healthcare data. As a Research Scientist, you will contribute to developing novel methods for accurately and scalably synthesizing information from complex medical records, pushing the boundaries of AI in healthcare.

Responsibilities:
* Conduct research and development in machine learning, natural language processing, and related fields, with a focus on LLMs for medical data.
* Design and implement novel algorithms and models.
* Analyze complex medical datasets to extract meaningful insights.
* Collaborate with engineers to translate research findings into production systems.
* Publish research findings in top-tier conferences and journals.
* Stay abreast of the latest advancements in AI/ML and healthcare informatics.
* Work closely with clinical experts to ensure the relevance and accuracy of models.

Technical Skills:
* PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, or a related quantitative field.
* Strong publication record in leading ML/NLP conferences (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, ACL, JAMA, NEJM).
* Deep understanding of machine learning theory and practice, especially deep learning and LLMs.
* Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in ML research (e.g., Python) and ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow).
* Experience working with large datasets. Experience with medical or clinical data is a strong plus.

Ideal Candidate:
* PhD degree is a firm requirement.
* Minimum 4 years of relevant work or research experience (can include PhD research).
* Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research and produce high-quality results.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
* Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts clearly.
* Passion for advancing AI research and its application to improve healthcare outcomes.
