Polaron is an Imperial College London spinout using generative AI to bridge the gap between process (how materials are made) and performance (how materials behave), accelerating the design of advanced materials for applications like batteries and wind turbines. We recently won the UK Government’s £1 million Manchester Prize for AI innovation.

We are building a dynamic, collaborative team focused on innovation and excellence, based in our Shoreditch, London office (with hybrid options available).

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will join our team to build and scale our platform, enabling materials designers to leverage state-of-the-art AI. Responsibilities on our roadmap include:
- Scaling our canvas-based frontend (React/Next.js/TypeScript) to handle images with greater than 10k x 10k pixel resolution.
- Intelligently autoscaling our GPU cluster (Kubernetes/AWS/Terraform) in response to customer demand for computationally intensive ML tasks.
- Building a robust, well-documented public-facing API (Express/Prisma/TypeScript), in addition to our web-based interface.
- Collaborating closely with ML engineers and materials scientists to integrate backend services and frontend components.

We seek creative problem-solvers passionate about building robust, scalable software and working with cutting-edge AI. The ideal candidate will have strong experience across our tech stack: TypeScript (React / Next.js / Express / Prisma), Python (PyTorch exposure beneficial), PostgreSQL, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, Terraform. Experience with large-scale systems, cloud infrastructure, API design, or data-intensive applications is essential.
