Polaron is an Imperial College London spinout company using generative AI to revolutionize materials science. Our technology bridges the gap between process (how materials are made) and performance (how materials behave), enabling materials designers to leverage state-of-the-art AI techniques in their daily work. We are a small, well-funded team that recently won the UK Government's inaugural Manchester Prize for AI innovation and public good. As a Senior Machine Learning Engineer at Polaron, you will develop and deploy machine learning models that power our platform for materials design. You will work on cutting-edge AI research to improve our algorithms for predicting material properties and optimizing manufacturing processes. This role requires deep technical expertise in machine learning and a passion for solving complex problems in materials science. Key responsibilities include: - Designing and implementing machine learning models using Python and PyTorch - Collaborating with materials scientists to define research problems - Optimizing models for deployment in production environments - Experimenting with new AI techniques and evaluating their effectiveness - Building tools to analyze and visualize experimental results - Mentoring junior ML engineers and researchers - Writing research papers and presenting findings at conferences - Integrating ML models with our software platform To succeed in this role, you should have: - 7+ years of experience in machine learning and AI - Expertise in deep learning frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow) - Strong background in statistics and mathematics - Experience with generative models and reinforcement learning - Familiarity with materials science concepts - Programming skills in Python, preferably with scientific computing libraries - Experience with cloud ML services (AWS SageMaker, GCP AI Platform) - Excellent communication skills to explain complex concepts - Publications in AI or materials science fields
