Infrastructure Engineer Datacenter Engineer Hardware Networking Supply Chain Go GRPC Linux Bare Metal PXE Automation Monitoring Remote On-call BGP Datacenter Operations Physical Infrastructure Back End Engineer Staff Engineer
Company: Railway is building its own global datacenter infrastructure ("Railway Metal") to deliver a superior, "infra-less" cloud experience, moving beyond reliance on hyperscalers like GCP. This involves designing, procuring, installing, and managing physical hardware and network infrastructure worldwide.

Role: This Infrastructure Engineer role focuses specifically on Railway's physical datacenter buildout and operation, bridging the gap between the physical world (atoms) and the software world (bits). You will be involved in designing, procuring, building, and automating the management of Railway's datacenter presence globally. This includes hardware selection, rack layout design, supply chain management, network setup (including BGP), automation (inventory, PXE booting), and ensuring reliability and performance of the physical infrastructure.

Responsibilities:
- Contribute to the design and architecture of Railway's physical datacenter infrastructure.
- Participate in hardware procurement, potentially involving large ($1m+) orders.
- Manage aspects of the global supply chain for hardware delivery and installation.
- Design and optimize rack-level layouts for power, cooling, and cabling efficiency.
- Build and maintain automated systems for server provisioning (PXE), inventory management, and monitoring.
- Configure network devices and manage routing (BGP).
- Collaborate with datacenter providers and contractors.
- Develop application-level code (Go, GRPC) to integrate physical infra with Railway's control plane.
- Utilize OS primitives (syscalls, cgroups) for system management and automation.
- Participate in an on-call rotation covering physical infrastructure issues.

Technical Skills:
- Experience building application-level code (Golang, GRPC, interacting with APIs).
- Understanding of OS primitives (syscalls, cgroups, Linux).
- Experience operating and troubleshooting bare metal servers.
- Knowledge of datacenter fundamentals: power (AC/DC, PDU, 3-phase), cooling, racks, cabling (fiber optics, copper).
- Networking fundamentals: TCP/IP, Ethernet, switching, routing (BGP preferred).
- Experience with server provisioning technologies (PXE, IPMI/BMC, Redfish).
- Automation scripting/programming skills.
- (Desired) Experience with hardware procurement and supply chain management.
- (Desired) Experience designing rack layouts and datacenter infrastructure.
- (Desired) Experience building automated inventory and bootstrapping systems.

Ideal Candidate:
- Possesses a unique blend of software engineering and physical infrastructure skills/interest.
- Has experience delivering complex projects from 0 to N, understanding the lifecycle from brilliant solution to tech debt.
- Operates with agency, urgency, and foresight (shipping for today, designing for 10x).
- Excellent communicator, capable of documenting complex physical and logical systems.
- Confident decision-maker with the grit to deliver critical infrastructure projects.
- Detail-oriented and adaptable to the unique challenges of working with physical infrastructure and vendors globally.
- Comfortable with the on-call responsibilities associated with critical infrastructure.
