What is the Surge AI Fellowship Program?

The Surge AI Fellowship is founded on a singular conviction: progress in artificial intelligence must be grounded in quality at the highest level. In recent years, AI systems have achieved remarkable breakthroughs yet they continue to reveal critical limitations when applied to academic research. To address this, we are convening leading scholars and practitioners, PhD-level experts across disciplines, to guide the development of models capable of performing at the frontier of human knowledge. Our initial efforts are concentrated in the STEM fields, where rigor, precision, and depth of understanding are indispensable. Our vision is a future where AI is both safe and accurate—advancing human knowledge while meeting the most exacting standards of scholarship. To realize this, we are committed to ensuring that the world’s brightest minds are the ones leading this initiative.

What are the responsibilities of a Fellow?

Fellows are entrusted with advancing the frontier of evaluating model development. They focus on systematically identifying the limitations and failure modes of current AI systems, designing rigorous challenges to probe their boundaries, and collaborating with Surge AI leadership to propose and refine strategies for improvement.
