Backend Engineer

About Synapto: Synapto is a well-funded early-stage startup specializing in payments. We are already processing payments for our customers in production and are building a comprehensive billing system. Our tech stack is Java/gRPC/jOOQ and we are committed to simplicity, flexibility, and quality.

About The Role: We are looking for a Backend Engineer to join our small team of 5. In this role, you will be responsible for building and scaling our payment infrastructure. You will work on critical features including billing (invoices, subscriptions, taxes), split-payments (account boarding, ledgers, payout, etc.), and developer tooling (API, webhooks, idempotence, rate limiting, etc.). This is a unique opportunity to make a significant impact in a fast-paced environment.

What You’ll Do:

• Design and develop scalable and reliable backend systems for payment processing
• Build and maintain billing features including invoicing, subscription management, and tax calculations
• Develop split-payment features such as account boarding, ledger management, and payout processing
• Create developer tooling to support our platform, including API design, webhooks, and rate limiting
• Ensure the quality and reliability of our systems, with a focus on simplicity and flexibility

Requirements:

• Proven experience in backend engineering, particularly with Java and distributed systems
• Strong understanding of gRPC and jOOQ
• Experience with payment processing and billing systems
• Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
