AI Research LLM Self-Improving Systems ARC-AGI Reinforcement Learning Evolutionary Algorithms Distributed Systems AI Engineer Data Science

About Tufalabs: Tufa Labs is a small, independent research group based in Zurich, Switzerland, dedicated to fundamental AI research. Since its founding about a year ago, the lab has been fueled by a passion for AI since around 2008, when the founder always believed that AI research would be the most impactful technology. After initial attempts in ML/AI research, the lab was born from applying AI to quant finance and securing funding. Their research priorities include investigating o-style systems (post-training, system2 reasoning), wrapping up ARC-related research, and learning to train and fine-tune LLMs. They focus on LLM-based reasoning, self-improving loops, and scaling trends. The lab is involved in ARC-AGI, a benchmark designed by François Chollet (creator of Keras) to measure intelligence by skill-acquisition efficiency. Tufa Labs has published research on topics like AlphaWrite (inference-time compute scaling for writing), self-rewarding self-improving models, LLMs for engineering, and LADDER (self-improving LLMs through recursive decomposition). They also have a paper on Deep Learning for ARC. The lab values intellectual curiosity, high intrinsic motivation, perseverance, and fast experimentation. They are funded for at least the next 3 years and aim to elevate from GPU-poor to GPU-rich. They are looking for obsessive individuals who share their research interests.

Role Overview: Tufa Labs is seeking AI Researchers and Engineers to join our small but mighty team. In this role, you will contribute to our mission of advancing AI through rigorous research and innovative engineering. You will work on challenging problems in AI reasoning, self-improvement, and scaling, with the potential to make significant impacts on the field.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement novel AI research directions, particularly in LLM-based reasoning and self-improving systems.
  • Collaborate with the team to define and execute on research projects, ensuring alignment with our mission.
  • Develop and test new algorithms and systems, using our in-house research infrastructure.
  • Analyze and interpret research data, contributing to publications and open-source projects.
  • Mentor and guide junior researchers and engineers, fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration.

Requirements:

  • A strong background in AI, machine learning, or related fields, with a demonstrated passion for fundamental research.
  • Experience in areas such as LLMs, reasoning, or self-improvement is highly desirable.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to tackle open-ended research questions.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, essential for working effectively in a small team.

Nice-to-Haves:

  • Experience with ARC-AGI or similar benchmarks.
  • Familiarity with evolutionary algorithms, reinforcement learning, or self-improving systems.
  • Programming experience in Python, with libraries like TensorFlow or PyTorch.

Benefits:

  • Competitive salary of $165k, with potential for equity.
  • Remote work flexibility, though the position is based in Zurich and requires occasional onsite presence.
  • Opportunity to work on groundbreaking research with real-world impact.
  • Support for professional development and learning.

We are looking for individuals who are not just skilled but also deeply curious and committed to pushing the limits of AI. If you thrive in a challenging research environment and are driven by the prospect of making fundamental contributions to AI, we encourage you to apply.
