About The Role:

We're looking for a Software Designer who combines exceptional design skills with hands-on coding expertise. This role is crucial in owning the end-to-end user experience for Zed, ensuring it feels intuitive, cohesive, and awesome to use for developers. You'll design simple, effective, and clean interfaces that empower developers and scale, while working directly in Zed's Rust codebase to fully implement the features you design.

Key Responsibilities:
- Own the end-to-end user experience, ensuring Zed feels intuitive, cohesive, and awesome to use for developers
- Design simple, effective, and clean interfaces that empower developers and scale
- Help shape the product roadmap and build a strong vision, guiding the team toward it
- Work directly in Zed's Rust codebase while collaborating with a small team of engineers to fully implement the features you designed
- Maintain and evolve Zed’s design system to make building Zed smooth and easy
- Monitor and optimize user experience, accessibility, and performance

Required Skills and Ideal Candidate:
- You love designing in code as much as in Figma
- You're detail-oriented and have great taste
- You enjoy operating on the bleeding edge, work well with ambiguity, and ship
- You are excited to learn Rust and get your hands dirty creating interfaces in Zed's custom-built UI framework, GPUI
- Background in developer tools is a plus
- Excellent communication skills for remote collaboration
- Passion for creating beautiful, functional interfaces for developer tools

Bonus Qualifications:
- Experience with Rust programming
- Familiarity with Zed's GPUI framework
- Background in collaborative software design
